Related ToursJuneteenth Heritage Walk Subjects#223 SNELL STREET, Gil Roberts Home Gilbert Roberts moved to Snell Street when he married Ida Bateman. She was born in Amherst in 1895 and passed away in 1982. Ida had several great uncles who were in the Civil War. Her great grandfather, Richard Bateman, was born in Belchertown in 1807. Gil, as he is known, graduated from Amherst High School and played on the 1915 hockey team.now lives in his Snell Street home with his son. His European friends included Josephine Baker, Ernest Hemingway, Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet. Gil Roberts' granddaughter Debora Bridges recalls that every summer for two weeks, family from NYC would come to Snell Street and there would be music every night.
